Kazakhtelecom completed assembling of two route segments of Asia- Europe fiber-optic line

/IRBIS, Nov 15, 00/ - The Kazakhtelecom has completed assembling and
construction of two sectors of the Asia-Europe fiber-optic line. The project is
executed jointly with Siemens AG.
The extension of the Western Kazakhstan segment is 2,540 km. It is planned
to accomplish construction by year 2001. The Kazakhstan route consists of
following segments: Chymkent - Kyzyl-Orda - Aktubinsk - Atyrau. In Russia it
will be connected with Rostov-na-Danu - Astrakhan line. The total cost of the
project is estimated to be equals to DEM63 mln ($27.7 mln).
Kazakhstan has for the first time implemented STM-16 data transmission
system that could simultaneously provide 30,000 telephone channels. The
line will be able to transmit all type of information.
Twenty three district centres will be provided with digital telephone
stations.
The total length of Kazakhstan line is around 10,000 km. This is the shortest
communication traffic from Europe to China, Japan, and the rest of Suth-
East Asia. It will also provide transit services to Central Asia and Russia and
the rest of CIS.
