National Bank of Kazakhstan has transferred $33 million for the population's deposits converting

/REUTERS, Almaty office, Jan.11, 00/ - The National Bank of Kazakhstan
has transferred $33 million to the commercial banks for converting of the
population's deposits frozen at the introduction of the floating tenge rate, -
has informed Grigory Marchenko, the head of the National Bank.
"We have transferred to the banks $33 million at an old rate of 88.3 tenge
for dollar in order to they could execute the obligations before the
population", - he has told.
Marchenko has added, what approximately $3 million will be transferred in
these days, as will be required by the banks.
The Government and the National Bank at the transition to the floating tenge
rate in April of 1999, have promised to the investors, that if they keep the
deposits in the banks during nine months (to the end of 1999) they will have
a capability to convert it at the pre-devaluation rate of 88.3 tenge for 1 US
dollar.
The banks transfer the sum of the tenge deposits to the National Bank, the
National Bank converts them in US dollars at the rate of 88.3 tenge and
enumerate them to the bank's corresponding account.
According to Marchenko, the National Bank will compensate a difference in
exchange to the sum of 1.8 billion tenges ($12.857 million).
"People are convinced that we execute the promises", - has told Marchenko.
