Kazakhtelecom sets up satellite communication for remote regions

/IRBIS, Nov.30, 99/ - REUTERS informs, based on public relations
department of the company, that OJSC Kazakhtelecom, national operator of
Kazakhstani communication system, is implementing the project to set up a
satellite communication network with 120 populated areas located in remote
and hardly reached regions.
"Implementation of the project will let 120 remote, hardly reached regions of
Kazakhstan to be connected to telephone lines. Satellite communication
network will provide village population with telephone, facsimile and
information services", is said in the press-release.
Last year a contract was signed between Kazakhtelecom and Israeli "Gilat
Satellite Networks" to supply and install satellite communication with a few
channels based on DAMA technology.
Currently, this technology is being used in 52 populated areas and another
48 cities and communities are expected to be hooked up to this system by
the end of the year. There is no information on the cost of the project.
