Kazakhstan budget appropriated 1 bln. tenge for parliament elections - Central Elections Committee (CEC)

/Almaty office of REUTERS, 11.08.99/ - Kazakhstan appropriated about one
billion tenge for the elections to the parliament and to local executive
bodies (maslikhats) to be held in fall, said the chairman of the Central
elections committee (CEC) Zagila Balieva.
"The budget appropriated 276 million tenge for financing the election
campaign of Majilis (one of the houses of the parliament) deputies, and
another 666 million tenge for the election campaign of maslikhats (local
executive bodies of the government) with total of around 1 billion tenge",
said Balieva.
In Kazakhstan the elections to the house of the parliament - Majilis,
where political parties were given 10 seats out of 77, and to maslikhats
are scheduled on October 10. To other house of the parliament - Senate 16
people will be reelected on September 17.
Registration of the candidates to Majilis is held between August 11 and
September 9, and registration of the candidates to maslikhats is held
between August 9 and August 31. Registration of those who wishes to
become a senator will end on August 27, said the chairman of the Central
elections committee.
Balieva says that candidates' election fund can be as much as 4.5 million
tenge and this amount is formed with candidate's own money and voluntary
donations of citizens and organizations. The limit is set at 39.75 million
tenge for election fund of political parties.
Balieva also says that the Central committee will monitor financing of the
candidates' propaganda activities.
"The Central election committee will strictly monitor propaganda campaigns
so that they are not financed from foreign sources", she added.
