Because of fire, launching of sulfuric acid production workshop of Kazakhmys can be delayed

/INTERFAX-KAZAKHSTAN, Karaganda, March 29, 07/ - For the reason that
the big fire broke up in the sulfuric acid workshop under construction of the
corporation Kazakhmys, putting in operation this object can be delayed.
"We planned to open the workshop by 70-th anniversary of Balkhash, but
due to the fire, the launching will take place later," the chairman of the Board
of Corporation KazakhmysLLP Eduard Ogay informed on Thursday at
maslikhat (the local representative body of the power) of Karaganda region of
Kazakhstan (I the center), on which territory, including Balkhash city, the
main production assets of the corporation are located.
E. Oghay informed maslikhat deputies that the conflagration happened in the
workshop on March 21, the fire spread on area of 1380 square meters. The
total area of the workshop under construction is 1600 square meters.
It took about two hours to stop the fire, 10 cars of the regional fire fighting
service were employed and 34 firemen of the staff.
The reason for the fire and property damage will be determined. As E. Oghay
noted, the property damage is "so big, expensive technique has been out of
action".
The 70-th anniversary of Balkhash is planed to celebrate in June this year.
"Kazakhmys" is the biggest in Kazakhstan producer of copper, in 2005 it
offered shares in London on behalf of the company Kazakhmys Plc,
registered in Great Britain. "Kazakhmys" includes four production
conglomerations: "Zhezkazgantsvetmet", "Balkhashtsvetmet",
"Vostoktsvetmet", "Karagandatsvetmet".
