S&P REVISES OUTLOOK ON KAZAKHSTAN BANKS Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today it revised its outlook on Kazakhstan-based banks Kazkommertsbank (JSC) (KKB) and Bank TuranAlem (BTA) to positive from stable. At the same time, the 'BB-/B' long- and short-term counterparty credit and certificate of deposit ratings on the banks were affirmed. "The rating actions reflect the sustained positive trends in the Kazakh economy, as well as the banks' strengthening core earnings," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Magar Kouyoumdjian. The ratings on both banks reflect their strong franchise, improved core earnings, and good asset quality. Both banks also benefit from having foreign minority shareholders, which is improving corporate governance, systems, and risk management. The ratings on both banks are constrained by the high but improving economic and industry risks prevailing in the country, as well as rapid loan growth, which has pressured capitalization and leaves the banks' asset quality vulnerable to an economic downturn. "The positive outlook on the two banks reflects their strong position in a fast growing economy, which is increasingly reflected in their good performance in recent years," said Mr. Kouyoumdjian. "The prospect of higher ratings would largely be dependent on reduced concentrations, stronger capitalization, and the reduction of loan growth," he added. [2004-06-08]
