/IRBIS, September 2, 02/ - In August of 2002 volume of transactions in foreign currency at Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE) reached the equivalent of USD226,592.5 th. (KZT34,968.1m) and decreased relative to July of 2002 by USD5,552.5 th. (KZT757.3m) or by 2.4% (2.1%). Relative to August of last year the volume increased by USD104,891.8 th. (KZT17,057.1m) or by 86.2% (95.2%). No changes were made in order of trades in foreign currency in August. Total of 1,885 deals (1,714) were made within a month (hereafter comparable figures of previous month are given in parentheses), including: in U.S. dollars on TOD terms - 1,881 (1,949), on TOM terms - 3 (17); in euro - 0 (0), in Russian ruble - 1 (9). Share of US dollar in a total turnover of the exchange currency market totaled 99.98% (99.9%). Volume of transactions in U.S. dollars reached $226,545.0 th. ($231,920.0) for KZT34,960.8m (35,690.7m). For comparison, total volume of USD deals in August of 2001 at KASE amounted to $121,670.0 th. in the amount of KZT17,906.5m. Tenge devaluation rate against dollar, calculated at weighted average rate of the main session of the Exchange, is estimated in August of 2002 (July 31, 02 = KZT154.26 - August 31, 02 = KZT154.53) by a trend of 2.06% APR. Last month average devaluation rate of tenge was equal to 7.61% APR. Weighted average rate of the U.S. dollar against the tenge, calculated by the deals of the main session in August - KZT154.31 per unit. For July of 2002 - KZT153.91 per dollar. Based on the data of the National Bank, volume of over-the-counter deals in U.S. dollars between the operators-residents of Kazakhstan in August of 2002 (August 1, 02 through August 27, 02, later data are not available) reached $264,025.0 th. Volume of all interbank over-the-counter market during this period: purchases - $266,486.0 th., sales - $277,112.0 th. For Russian rouble volume of deals in August of 2002 reached RUR47.5m (7.1m) for a total of KZT7.3m (34.6m). Tenge fluctuation rate against rouble, estimated using weighted average rate of KASE, equaled in August of 2002 (July 31, 02 = KZT4.8830 - August 31, 02 = KZT4.8930) by the trend of 2.41% APR. Last month this figure was 4.60% APR. Volume of over-the-counter transactions on Russian rouble between operators-residents of Kazakhstan according to the National Bank data, in August of 2002 (from August 1, 02 to August 27, 02, later data are not available) was RUR18,029.0 th. Volume of deals of entire over-the counter interbank market (taking into account non-residents) in this period: purchase - RUR57,402.0 th., sale - RUR22,629.0 th.
