/IRBIS, June 29, 01/ - In June, in foreign exchange currency sector of the
Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE) trades were held in U.S. dollars (TOD,
TOM, SPOT terms), Deutsche marks (TOD, TOM for German holidays),
euros (TOD, TOM for holidays in Europe), and Russian roubles (TOD).
Three sessions were held daily: the morning (main - TOD, if it falls on a
holidays in USA or Europe - TOM), day (additional - TOD, if it falls on a
holidays in USA or Europe - TOM) and evening (TOM, SPOT).
Total of 1,354 deals were made within a month, including: in U.S. dollars at
the main and additional sessions on TOD terms - 1,350, on TOM terms - 2;
in Russian rouble (additional session) on TOD - 2.
Total volume of the operations (hereafter corresponding figures for previous
month are given in parentheses) reached an equivalent of KZT20,879.7m
(23,514.7), or $142,438.8 th. (160,916.6). The U.S. dollar accounted for
99.9% (99.9%) of the Exchange's total turnover.
Volume of transactions in U.S. dollars reached $142,315.0 th. (160,730.0)
for KZT20,861.5m (23,487.4), including:
- at the main and additional sessions on TOD terms - $141,715.0 th.
(160,460.0) for an amount of KZT20,773.6m (23,448.0) with average of
the trade sessions $6,748.0 th. (8,023.0);
- at the evening on TOM term - $600.0 th. (270.0) for an amount of
KZT88.0m (39.5).
In June of the year 2000 total volume of operations in U.S. dollars at KASE
equaled $139,874.3 th. for an amount of KZT19,951.7m.
Tenge devaluation rate, calculated at weighted average rate of the main
session of the Exchange, is estimated in June 2001 (May 31, 01 = 145.47 -
June 29, 01 = 146.80) by a trend of 2.84% APR. Last month average
devaluation rate of tenge was equal 5.31% APR.
Weighted average rate of the U.S. dollar against the tenge, calculated by
the deals of the main session in June - KZT146.59 per unit. For May -
KZT146.13 per dollar. Weighted average rate for 2001 equaled KZT145.76
Based on the data of the National Bank, volume of interbank over-the-
counter deals in U.S. dollars between the operators-residents of
Kazakhstan in June 2001 (June 1, 01 through June 26, 01, earlier data
unavailable) reached $311.365 th. Volume of all interbank over-the-counter
market: purchases - $340,623.0 th., sales - $352,747 th.
For Russian rouble volume of deals in Russian rouble reached RUR3.6m
(2.9) for a total of KZT18.2m (14.6). Tenge fluctuation rate estimated using
weighted average rate of KZT/RUR at KASE equaled in June 2001 (May 31,
01 = 5.0300 - June 29, 01 = 5.0440) 3.50% APR. Last month this figure
equaled minus 4.82% APR.
No deals were made over Deutsche marks and euro.

In 2000 the volume of operations in foreign exchange at KASE was equal
USD1,743.4 mln. For the first six months, of 2000, the figure equaled
$756,912.0 th. Thus, volume of operations increased 10.7% or by $80,810.8 th.
