/IRBIS, Nov.1, 00/ - In October 2000 at the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange
(KASE) 73 deals in securities were made in all sectors of the market for a
total of $21,355.8 th., or KZT3,045.8 mln at current rate of the Exchange
effective on the day the deals were made on.
Below is the table presenting monthly volumes of deals with securities at
KASE in a year 2000 (thousand US dollars). IRBIS specialists warn that it is
possible to conduct hidden repo deals in securities purchase and sale sector
of the KASE, therefore, given volumes of the deals in this sector of the
market can include those deals.

In 1999 the volumes of securities operations at KASE were equal to $21,603.2
th.
The table shows that the volume that was reached in October is very high. It is
enough to say that this amount almost reached similar figure for the whole year
1999. It is also clear that the October record was due to big volumes of repo
deals.
Primary market of the month was represented by the offering of the tranche
of first issue coupon bonds of Almaty Merchant Bank CJSC
(KZ2CKAN3AA16; official list of the KASE securities under category "A",
ATFBb; Oct.2,00 - Oct.2,01; $100; $5.0 mln; semiannual coupon at 10.50%
APR) with the face value of $1.3 mln.
In purchase and sale sector the trades in 17 instruments were successful.
The most liquid were coupon bonds of NOTC KazTransOil CJSC
(KZ73LAONAA35; official list of the KASE securities under category "A",
KZTOb; Oct.23,00 - Oct.23,03; $100; $30.0 mln; semiannual coupon at
9.0%), which controlled 38.1% of all deals in the sector. By the information of
the IRBIS, a single deal was made in these bonds at initial offering of the
issue that was held by the issuer based on the subscription.
Then, in terms of liquidity there were common inscribed shares of Bank
TuranAlem OJSC (KZ1C34920412, official list of the KASE securities under
category "A", BTAS) - 33.5% of the turnover and common inscribed shares
of Kazakhtelecom (KZ1C12280417, official list of the KASE securities under
category "A", KZTK) - 9.8% of the sector's turnover.
28 deals out of 68 concluded deals were made by the brokers in the
Quotation system of the KASE, which eliminates automatic satisfaction of the
bids in counter auction mode (so-called direct deals that are made by the
operators upon agreements, and not the result of the trades on the market).
Remaining 40 deals was made in main mode of the KASE trade system by
using a counter auction mode.
In repo sector $1,028.6 th. (186 days at 12.97% APR in USD) worth of
repos were closed in shares of Bank CenterCredit OJSC and $2,453.8 th.
(30 days at 2.99% APR in USD) worth of repos were opened in Bank
TuranAlem OJSC shares in October.
Despite a significant increase in the volumes of operations, in October the
securities market of Kazakhstan at the Exchange (especially the market of
the shares) remains narrow, relatively sluggish and does not show any clear
trend in the dynamics of the market values of the securities.
The KASE index that reflects the changes in the bids on the shares from the
official list of the Exchange's securities of the category "A", including the
market capitalization of their issuers, increased by 0.6086 within a month, at
100.0005 at October 31 closing. The sine shaped change in the index (see
the table) fully reflects instability and narrowness of the market of shares,
as well as absence of any trend there.
