/IRBIS, Nov.25, 99/ - Yesterday, according to Almaty office of REUTERS,
Finance minister Majit Esenbaev said at the press conference the
government revoked one percent tax on sales of currency to private persons
introduced in April of this year. The information brought about some surprise
in the market.
Results of the poll of exchange booths and currency dealers, conducted by
EconoMix and IRBIS, respectively, indicate neither exchange booths (EB) of
Almaty nor commercial banks received any official documents regarding the
tax revoke.
Employees of EBs refer to "an official information" as the statement of the
National Bank's head Grigorii Marchenko on TV, saying the tax to be
removed from January 1, 2000. They say tax is still collected and currency
trades are held with the tax build into the sale price.
